Rice is a super cheap and filling addition to any meal — I especially love it as the foundation to my Easy Chicken Veggie Stir Fry, and also my grandma’s famous Chicken Divan Casserole. But I don’t like rice that’s bland….or clumpy.

Thankfully, this recipe is neither. It’s actually from my good friend, Trina, from TrinaHolden.com, and is pulled straight from the pages of her fabulous cookbook, Your Real Food Journey: A Gentle Guide to Steady Progress.

If you’re interested at all in trying to replace the typical American diet with a real food one, this book is your go-to guide. I’ve been slowly making my way through her tasty recipes, and though I’m far from being labeled a real foodie, I figure something is certainly better than nothing! You’ll also find out why white rice is often better than brown. I was totally surprised at this!

Anyway….back to this rice recipe! It’s quite simple, and super tasty.

How to Make Simple Steamed Rice

Step 1: Melt butter in large saucepan over medium heat.

Step 2: Add rice and sauté, stirring frequently until rice is fragrant and the grains have turned from slightly translucent to solid, creamy white {about 3 minutes}. According to Trina, this helps leftovers not clump as much, and I’d have to agree!

Step 3: Add chicken broth {or water} and salt. Cover and set to medium low to bring to a simmer. If rice starts to boil, lower the temperature even more.

Step 4: Cook for 15-25 minutes until all liquid is absorbed and rice is soft and fluffy.

Step 5: Serve as a side or with my Easy Chicken Veggie Stir Fry!

Ingredients

  • 1 tbsp butter
  • 1 1/2 cups rice
  • 3 cups chicken broth (or water)
  • 1/2 tsp salt

Instructions

  1. Melt butter in large saucepan over medium heat.
  2. Add rice and sauté, stirring frequently until rice is fragrant and the grains have turned from slightly translucent to solid, creamy white {about 3 minutes}.
  3. Add chicken broth {or water} and salt. Cover and set to medium low to bring to a simmer. If rice starts to boil, lower the temperature even more.
  4. Cook for 15-25 minutes until all liquid is absorbed and rice is soft and fluffy.

    Rice is our staple, white or brown rice. With your recipe, adding turmeric powder & lemongrass you will have fragrant flavorful yellow rice. Or with leftover steamed rice you can add an egg and make fried rice.

    1. Thanks for the tips, Jasmine! I always end up with leftover rice that I’m not sure what to do with. Joseph usually ends up eating it for breakfast. I’m going to have to try frying it next time.

  2. I have come to love brown rise. I eating it because it has SO much more nutrition and fiber than white rice, and now white rice, even with butter ans seasoning, tastes sort of boring. Just my two cents.

    1. My husband takes loving rice to a whole new level. He will eat rice for breakfast {piled with brown sugar and drowning in milk}. While I’ll eat rice almost any with any other meal he still hasn’t convinced me that rice is a proper substitute for my mini-wheats just yet. 🙂
