Celebrate Fall with what is seriously the best apple crisp recipe ever! The ginormous amount of topping paired with perfectly sweetened apples will having you wanting this for breakfast, lunch, dinner, AND dessert! #fallrecipes #applerecipes #applecrisp #homemadeapplecrisp #autumnrecipes

I love a good sweet and cinnamon-y apple crisp, especially when it’s eaten straight out of the oven with a heaping scoop {or two} of vanilla bean ice cream on top. Is there anything more heavenly, or Fall-like? Me thinks not.

I’ve been on the search for an over-the-top amazing apple crisp recipe since forever {okay, maybe just the last 7 years}, and when one of my previous co-workers shared her mom’s special secret recipe with me, I was hooked, and begged her to let me share it with you. She said YES!

Though I have yet to meet an apple crisp I didn’t like, the extra special ingredient in this particular one is topping overload. Pair the sugary mixture with perfectly sweetened, yet crispy apples, and you’ll be wanting this for Breakfast, Lunch, Dinner AND dessert.

I say, go for it!

How to Make the Best Apple Crisp

Step 1: Buy your favorite baking apple and you may want to use a peeler-corer-slicer to prep them super fast. These don’t cost much at all, yet save a ton of hassle if you make apple pies, crisp, and applesauce pretty often. Otherwise, it’s probably a kitchen gadget you don’t need!

If I were in NY, I would choose a Cortland apple for my crisp, but I have yet to find any in the produce section of Florida grocery stores. My second best is a Granny Smith.

Step 2: Slice apples into smaller pieces, then mix together a cinnamon, sugar, salt, and flour. Stir together with apples and spread into an 11×7 pan.

If you don’t have an 11×7 size pan {because I don’t!}, either calculate the difference required for a 9×13, or use a slightly smaller casserole dish. In all honesty though, I tried this recipe in a 9×13 without adjusting anything except for adding one more apple. It turned out just fine.

Step 3: Put together topping ingredients and mix with a pastry cutter. This is to mix the shortening in with the flour, sugar, and oats, but if you prefer to substitute butter or margarine, no harm there either!

Step 4: Spread topping over apple mixture. This is going to be THICK, but remember,  it’s one of my favorite things about this recipe — loads of topping!

Step 5: Bake crisp at 325 degrees F for about 45 minutes until top starts to brown.

Step 6: Then pair with a scoop of vanilla ice cream and serve warm!

    1. I’m so sorry about that, Lindsey! I’ve been having some trouble with my Recipe plugin. Sending you an email right now with the recipe!

  1. Hi! Do you think this could be prepared a week ahead of time and frozen? Or should it be baked first and then frozen?

    1. I’m not sure. I’ve never tried it before with this recipe. I would try to freeze it then bake it {you will have to adjust the baking time}. I think if you bake it then freeze that it would probably become more apple mush than apple crisp. 🙂

      1. Thank you so much Kalyn!!! this apple crisp recipe is so delightful its delicious baked to perfection. Definitely my favorite apple crisp recipe of all time because i love the extra thick topping. Such a simple recipe to bake for sure saving this and going to pass thi on to my little girl!
