This post is sponsored by Shopular, however all opinions and tendency to forget important coupons is 100% mine.
You arrive at the grocery/department store ready to scout out the best deals and pumped to earn some extra savings. You gaze down at your purse, and a quick but horrifying thought runs through your mind. You fiddle around inside even though you know the truth is inevitable — you forgot your coupons.
This happens to me way more times than I can count. I try to keep my coupon organizer in the car at all times, but sometimes I bring it back inside so I can cut coupons and sort all at once. That's when I'm most often to forget to put it back, and I could just kick myself for making it all the way to the store without it. Sometimes I'm only going just so I can use the coupon!
Depending on how far away you live from the store, there is the possibility that you can drive back home and run out again, but what a pain, especially if you live a good 20-30 minutes for the store. All the gas you use getting back and forth isn't worth a 30% coupon any day of the week.
So what can you do? Thankfully, there are quite a few options. Here are five of my favorites.
1. Use the Shopular App for Coupons
Not only do they feature popular retail store ads, they also offer coupon discounts that you can pull up and show the cashier for immediate savings.
I don't know if you are a push notification fan or not, but there is an option within Shopular to allow them access to your location so they can send you relevant deals and coupons the moment you walk in the store. This can be super convenient whether or not you forgot your coupons at home — there might be one with an even greater discount!
2. Download Store App for Coupons
I frequent arts and craft stores pretty often, so I always have those apps downloaded on my phone and digital coupons ready to go, but if I'm in a a different kind of store and forget my coupons, I always check to see if that particular store has an app for coupons as well. Some do and some don't, but never hurts to check!
Most retail store apps have a menu section for ads, coupons, shopping lists, and more, but I mainly use them for the coupons. Load it up on your phone before you get into the checkout line (no need to make anybody wait!), and then just show the cashier the coupon barcode for them to scan.
3. Check Your Email for Coupons
Remember how important it is to have a junk email for coupons and sales fliers? This is where having email on your phone can be incredibly handy too. Even if a store doesn't have an app for coupons, they may be sending coupons to your email periodically.
When I know I've seen a coupon in my email somewhere, I make sure to do a quick search on my phone to bring it up. Some will have a barcode to scan, but most of the time they don't. However, it doesn't hurt to ask! I've used coupons that weren't supposed to be accepted via a mobile device, but the cashier gave it to me anyway.
Cha-ching for even more savings!
4. Explain Your Situation at Checkout
Any time I have forgotten my coupons and didn't have access to one via an app or email, politely ask the cashier if they have a special promo coupon to use. Just be super nice if they don't have one or decide not to give it to you!
I have tried this at Kohls before, and I always get 15% off, just for asking. Other places I have heard this works is Old Navy, Michaels Arts and Crafts, and JoAnn's, but I have not tried at any of those places yet. Let me know in the comments if you know of another store that does this.
5. Purchase Your Items, and Come Back Later
If all else fails, and the coupon is actually worth using, make the purchase and then come back the following week with your coupon and the receipt. I know for sure that Bed Bath and Beyond will do this for you, but for others, I would check their coupon policy just in case.
And if you usually make a weekly trip into town for groceries and errands, it's not like you're driving out of your way to get there. Worth trying, at least!
Despite all of our best intentions to save, sometimes we just plain forget! It's not so much absent-mindedness, as I think it's being so busy and juggling multiple balls and activities at a time. We're bound to let something slip, and if it's no more than a little coupon, I'd say that's a success!
Plus, now you have five extra ways to save for whenever you forget yours at home. And if you haven't done so yet, just wait…..it will come.
