I like to think of myself as pretty disciplined and organized, so it comes as no surprise that my due dates earn a spot on the calendar right next to birthdays and special Holidays.
But sometimes, I just screw up. I’ll miss a deadline because I forgot to put it on calendar, or even worse, overlook a due date before going out of town. Mistakes happen, yet I rarely ever pay for a late fee.
What’s the secret?
All it takes is one simple phone call. Of course, your tone and payment history play a big part on whether or not the customer service rep takes pity on you!
Here are three characteristics to remember during the call:
- Be super super nice.
- Complement the company and tell them how much you like their product/service.
- Apologize profusely and be honest.
Example: “I’m SO very sorry this happened! We pay on time every month, and it just completely slipped my mind. We love using your service and is there any way you can waive this fee for me today? I’d be so appreciative!”
And then they will do it for you. Pretty much every time.
Try this for credit cards, utility bills, rental payments, or even a service you signed up for but forgot to cancel. It works! Although, I have had a hard time at the library. They can be sticklers there!
How do you avoid unnecessary fees?
