I’m going back to therapy. 🤍 I’m telling y I’m going back to therapy. 🤍

I’m telling you this because:

1️⃣ I want to be open about my own mental health journey

2️⃣ I want to show you that therapy is NORMAL

The last time I met with a counselor was September/October of last year. I only stopped because the monthly cost was taking a toll on our budget and I truly felt good enough to handle things on my own for a while.

👉🏻 SIDE NOTE: I hate that mental health help is so cost prohibitive. Break a wrist? That’s a $20 copay. Need to talk to someone? That will be $130. 🙄

Anyway, as much as I want to brush off my own internal struggles the last few weeks and read a book about how to deal with things instead, I know one-on-one help is what I need right now. And we’re going to do everything we can to cut back in other areas so we can make this happen.

If you need to reach out to someone and feel like you can’t afford it:

✓ Check programs like @betterhelp (that’s what I’m using). They provide discounts based on your income.

✓ See if your therapist will negotiate with you or at least put you on a payment plan.

✓ Check with your employer. Sometimes they offer assistance as a perk of working for them.

✓ Keep reading everything you can to help you work through what you need. I’ve found blog posts and forums immensely useful and full of ideas of new things to try!

And of course, continue to follow @kalynbrookeco. I’m not a licensed therapist, but I care about you and I want to see you get well.🤍

SAVE this post + DM this to someone who needs to know they’re not alone right now.

Two questions to ask yourself when you feel like y Two questions to ask yourself when you feel like you’ve failed ⬇️

1️⃣ Where is the positive in this?
2️⃣ What can I take away from this experience that will help me improve going forward?

Not only does this thinking keep you from a downward spiral of feeling like you can’t do anything right, it redeems your “failure” by looking at it in a different light and acknowledging that you *did* glean wisdom along the way, even if it wasn’t your favorite manner in which to do so.

So does that mean there’s no such thing as TRUE failure? Definitely gives you some food for thought.

SHARE this with someone who is going through a hard time right now and needs some encouragement!

Can we please STOP saying self-care is selfish? 🛑

This mostly comes from the Christian community who labels self-care as "misguided," "unbiblical," and even an "idol." (I share this faith, but not this viewpoint).

Let me be clear: I *do* agree that we shouldn't neglect our responsibilities completely for the sake of a little me-time. Your family still needs you. Your church still needs you. Your community still needs you.

But people don’t need a frazzled, stressed-out martyr who serves out of 😕obligation😕 rather than ✨joy✨.

Because when we demonize rest, we inadvertently swing the pendulum the other way and create an idol out of working/serving/hustling.

When it comes down to it, self-care is all about doing things that help make you a better person—spiritually, emotionally, and physically.

And that's not selfish. It's just wise.

👉🏻 What are your thoughts on self-care?

I can’t wait to share all the tidbits I learn from this highly recommended read.
