When it's hot out outside, the last thing I want to think about is turning on the oven. These incredibly yummy pulled pork sandwiches are a dinner-time favorite and mean I don't have to slave all day in the kitchen....my slow-cooker does most of the work! #slowcookersandwiches #crockpotmeals #crockpotrecipes #crockpotrecipeideas #slowcookerrecipeideas #bbqsandwiches #pulledporksandwiches

I am not a huge fan of pork. Wait, let me rephrase that…I’m not a total meat lover in general, although I do enjoy a few simple chicken and beef recipes. However, being married to someone who thinks he needs meat to live, I do have to expand my horizons and at least try a few new recipes every once in a while!

Since I’ve been wanting to use my crockpot a little bit more, I decided to try this, shall we say, very interesting version of pulled pork sandwiches. I didn’t have super high hopes for it, but I couldn’t have been more wrong.

It was incredibly yummy.

The meat is soft and tender with a hint of spicy sweetness, and includes a secret ingredient that turned this meaty recipe into one of our all-time favorites. Probably what I love most though, is that it sits in the slow-cooker all day long, and you don’t have to do anything except grab sandwich rolls and some chips or fruit as a side.

Now we have a meat-filled winner we can both agree on!

The Process

Step 1: Grease the inside of your crockpot with Pam spray or butter.

Step 2: Rub 1 tablespoon of Homemade Jamaican Jerk Seasoning into the pork on all sides. Just make sure to wash your hands really well after touching the meat and the seasoning. This blend contains red pepper flakes which can irritate your eyes if you rub them…..and yes, that is from personal experience!

Step 3: Sprinkle thyme and onion flakes on top of the meat for even more flavor.

Step 4: Then it’s time for the super secret ingredient that takes this recipe to the next level….the cola. You can use Pepsi, Coke, or an off-brand. I’ve tried all three and it really doesn’t make any difference. Still comes out perfect every time!

Step 5:
Cover cooker with lid and cook on low for 8 hours. When it’s finished, remove the pork from cooker and place on a large cutting board, then cut the netting with kitchen scissors. Remove all juices from cooker and set aside.

Step 6: Use 2 forks to pull pork into shreds, being careful to get rid of all fat pieces that you see, and return pork to the slow-cooker.

Step 7: Stir in barbecue sauce and 1/2 cup of reserved juices, making sure all meat pieces are coated. Increase the setting to high, then cover and cook for 30 minutes until heated through.

Pork can be quite expensive, so we don’t make this recipe all too often. But when we have a little extra in our grocery budget for the month, it’s nice to splurge as a special treat. In fact, I think sacrificing on the front end makes us appreciate dinners like these even more!
